Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)
Spinal cord injury (SCI) can occur after a fall, an accident or any physical contact that damages the spinal column. The spinal cord is responsible for transmitting signals between the brain and the rest of the body. The spinal cord is located within the spinal column. The spinal column has 31 bones called vertebrae. These vertebrae are located in the neck (7 cervical vertebrae), in the upper middle back (12 thoracic vertebrae), in the lower back (5 lumbar vertebrae), in the sacrum (5 sacral vertebrae), and in the coccyx (2 fused cocygeal vertebrae)
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Almost 50% of spinal cord injuries are the result of a car accident. Any damage to the spinal column can result it temporary or permanent neurologic impairments, including paralysis. The lifetime medical cost to treat a spinal cord injury resulting in paralysis is between $500,000 and $3,000,000 dollars depending on the extent of the injury, according to the CDC.
Obviously immediate medical attention is important, but equally important is continued medical attention. The path to recovering is hard and painful. Many times a victim of a spinal cord injury never fully recovers.
